Nest ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting the privacy of our users. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use the Nest mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service").
Information we collect
When you create an account and use Nest, we collect the following information:
- Account information: your name, .edu email address, university, major, and academic year.
- Profile information: your profile photo, which you choose to upload.
- Listing content: photos, descriptions, prices, and location information you include in sublease or marketplace listings.
- Messages: the content of messages you send and receive through our in-app chat feature.
- Usage data: information about how you interact with the Service, including pages viewed, searches performed, and features used.
- Device information: device type, operating system, and app version for functionality and troubleshooting purposes.
How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Verify your identity as a university student through your .edu email address.
- Display your profile and listings to other verified users on the platform.
- Show mutual connections between users to build trust.
- Enable in-app messaging between users.
- Send push notifications about messages and listing activity.
- Improve and develop the Service based on usage patterns.
- Communicate with you about updates to the Service.
How we share your information
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your data with advertisers. Your information is shared only in the following limited circumstances:
- With other Nest users: your profile, listings, and mutual connection counts are visible to other verified users on the platform.
- Service providers: we use third-party services (such as Firebase and Google Maps) to operate the platform. These providers process data on our behalf and are bound by their own privacy policies.
- Legal requirements: we may disclose information if required by law, legal process, or to protect the safety of our users.
Data storage and security
Your data is stored securely using Firebase, a Google Cloud service, with encryption in transit and at rest. We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information. However, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
.edu email verification
Nest requires an active .edu email address to create an account. We use this to verify that every user on the platform is a current university student. Your .edu email is used for verification and account communications only.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate information in your profile.
- Delete your account and all associated data at any time through the app settings.
- Opt out of non-essential communications.
Data retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we permanently delete your personal information, profile, listings, and message history within 30 days. Anonymized usage data may be retained for analytics purposes.
Children's privacy
Nest is intended for university students who are at least 18 years old. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from a person under 18, we will delete that information promptly.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the updated policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
